At a brief glance, you may not realize how harmful mosquitoes truly are. You probably know that after they bite you, you have to scratch that area, and the itching can get annoying. What you may not be aware of, is that mosquitoes cause more suffering to humans than any other organism. Every year, more than one million people die worldwide from mosquito-borne diseases. Mosquitoes transmit diseases that affect humans, but they also transmit diseases and parasites that cause harm to animals, primarily dogs and horses.
One of the most wide spread diseases in the world is Malaria. A mosquito-borne disease caused by parasites, it’s symptoms include fever, chills, and a flu-like illness. If malaria isn’t treated, there can be sever complications including death. Symptoms can begin to appear anywhere from 10 days to 4 weeks after infection, but a person could start to feel ill as early as 7 days, or as late as 1 year later.
One of the few good things about malaria, is that it can be prevented. Most commonly associated with sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia, there are still 1,500 cases of malaria diagnosed in the United States each year, with most of those cases stemming from travelers or immigrants.
Treatment of malaria depends on a variety of factors, such as the severity of the disease, the species of the malaria parasite causing the infection, and the part of the world in which the infection was acquired, and a person’s age, weight, and pregnancy status could also limit treatment options for malaria.
There are a number of organizations that help to reduce deaths from malaria. Mosquito Squad Houston has partnered with Malaria No More, a nonprofit organization, to help end malaria deaths in Africa. We donate $1 for every treatment we perform because we know that just $1 can save a life. Find out more information about this great cause on their website.
